Naledge took a break during the "Swagger Like Us" recording session at SoundScape studios to get his blog on. Here Naledge talks about hitting the road with Murs, hands a sweet sixteen to anybody still "mad about a t-shirt", and issues an open invitation to join the Brainiac Society. Check it all out below.
It’s the first of October, we’re live from SoundScape Studios just had an all day session. I’ve been in Chicago all week and it feels good to be here. I haven’t been here in a while. I’m trying to rest up before this Murs tour, but still working all at the same time. I just did five joints today that I feel real good about. I’m happy about the response the Brainiac Mixtape is getting. I heard that we’ve surpassed 10,000 downloads in a week, that’s crazy. The guys at the site have been mad at me, I guess they crashed for a second because of all the downloads, so hopefully we can get it up to about 40-50,000 downloads when it’s all said and done. People who are really interested in being on Brainiac Vol. 2, please make submissions. Hit me up on Myspace and if it’s dope, I’ll hit you back. If it’s not just keep submitting.
Right now we’re doing “Swagger Like Chi”, RubyHornet’s mix of “Swagger Like Us”. There’s a lot of cats in the building as I do this blog. Really Doe is here. MarVo is here. Mikkey Halsted is here. I believe Bump J is on his way, GLC is getting on this as well. It’s a beautiful thing to see all these different Chicago cats getting together all in one room to make some music, and show some unity and stunt and floss at the same time to really rep the city. I think for a long time we thought that only one person or a few people could really rep Chicago, but now we’re starting to realize that each voice is pertinent, each voice is relevant. Each neighborhood is important to have representation cause our city is very diverse and there’s a large number of voices that have talent and deserve to be heard. It’s just wonderful to have it all in one area and all in one song and have no violence happen and no fake s**t happen. So, it’s a beautiful thing.
This Murs tour is something I’m really excited about. The people at Zune are partnering up with us to do a campus invasion at all the different markets we’re going to. We also got a good look from the people at L’Novo, the computers. So we’re going to be blogging on our new laptops. I’ll be sending Alex tons and tons of stuff for you to see, and hear while we’re on the road. I’m really, really excited. We have not been on a tour this long and this extensive, so I’m excited to see how people respond to us.
The “Love Hangover” video is number 9 right now on Sucker Free on MTV, so I’m proud of that, I’m happy about that. On a lighter note we just spent some time chilling with Chip Tha Ripper doing a day in the life shoot for RubyHornet. Hopefully you’ll be seeing that real soon. I showed Chip around Chicago, and obviously we went to the Kid Cudi/Hollywood Holt concert, which was really a beautiful site to see so many kids representing on the tour. I went to the show in New York, and Chicago was eight times liver than any of the shows that I’ve heard about from Mano and Nigel. It was just great to see so many people out and it was like a social gathering more than it was a concert. We all know and love each other and we see people doing their thing, and we support them. It’s a very good look.
I’m trying to figure out how to pack for two months. I’ve never had to do that up to this point. We’ll see how that goes. I think I’m going to go shopping tomorrow and pick up some gear, a couple pairs of sneakers or whatever.
Getting back to the “Swagger Like Chi”…I got real braggadocios on the record and I feel good about the verse, really good about the verse. I think it’s going to address a lot of people that have been throwing salt my way, so I threw a couple jewels back at them, let them hold something. Everyone comes at me saying, ‘let me hold something,’ so I’ll let you hold 16. See how it feels.
I’m really excited about this Brainiac Movement. It feels like my man Picnic, Task Productions, I’ve been working real closely with Nez and Rio as well, young dudes out of the Chi really doing their thing sonically. Fooch, Sugar Tongue Slim, these dudes are really doing their thing and I’m really excited about working with them. I’m glad the mixtape is getting such a good response, cause I think volume 2 and volume 3 are going to be even liver.
Saturday I’m doing a show at the Lava Lounge with my man Jesse Lee of DubFrequency and Crème De La Crème. I’m going to do a really short set, a club set. It should be a really live show. Chuck from The Cool Kids is DJing. It should just be a really fun show. I’m going to do a few records, and try to debut a new record, hopefully and see how the crowd receives it. Other than that I’m just trying to catch up on some Z’s and really put in work after I get out of here.
I want everybody to come out to this Murs tour when you see we’re coming to your town. We’re going to give you a really live show. And right now I’m going to get back to this session…
